Update 3-11-2020

We’ve been hearing from lots of families about their coronavirus concerns and we are here to help.

1. Your child has a fever and/or respiratory symptoms

AND

2. Your child has recently traveled to China, South Korea, Japan, Iran, or Italy
    or
Your child has been potentially exposed to family/friends that have recently traveled to China, South Korea, Japan, Iran, or Italy

Coronavirus and Helpful Resources

We at Lake Forest Pediatrics are aware of your concerns regarding the COVID-19 coronavirus and are closely monitoring reports from the CDC, AAP, and WHO regarding the diagnosis and spread of this disease. One reassuring point that’s become apparent as cases of COVID-19 have been studied is that children infected with coronavirus have experienced very mild symptoms. However, if you are concerned that your child may have coronavirus, please call our office rather than bringing your child in for evaluation since we are unable to test for COVID-19 but want to assist you in getting your child the appropriate medical evaluation. Here are two helpful articles that discuss COVID-19 and how to protect you and your family:

PROTECTING YOURSELF FROM CORONAVIRUS

What is Coronavirus?
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a respiratory illness that can spread from person to
person. Symptoms can include fever, cough, and shortness of breath. The virus that causes COVID-19 is a novel coronavirus that was first identified during an investigation into an outbreak in Wuhan, China.

Prevention
The best way to prevent infection is to avoid being exposed to the virus that causes COVID-19.
There are simple everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory viruses,
including:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.

If you are sick, to keep from spreading respiratory illness to others, you should:

  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

Travel Warnings
CDC recommends that travelers avoid all nonessential travel to China, South Korea, Iran, and Italy. CDC also advises that older adults and those with chronic medical conditions consider postponing nonessential travel to Japan. Travelers should practice usual precautions when traveling to Hong Kong. If you plan to travel internationally, you can enroll in the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program to receive important messages, alerts, updates, and travel advisories while you are there.

Lake Forest Pediatric Associates held a successful School Supply Drive for local Round Lake area children affected by the flooding in August. Families with children at Beach Elementary, Ellis Elementary, and Murphy Elementary were especially impacted by area flooding.

Thank you to our staff from all three Lake Forest Pediatric Associates’ offices who participated in the school supply drive by purchasing, collecting, sorting, and delivering the school supplies. Backpacks, notebooks, art supplies, and more filled three extra-large boxes to overflowing!

Members of our Employee Engagement Committee delivered the school supplies to the Superintendent Office, Round Lake Community Unit School District 116, to be distributed throughout the school district.

Financial donations for restoration efforts from the flooding may be sent to the Round Lake Area Schools Education Foundation.

An estimated 1.7 million spectators enthusiastically supported the runners by ringing bells, clapping, holding up signs, and shouting kind words of support.

For those families with Land of Lincoln Health insurance, changes are in the works.

As you may have heard, the health insurance plan is being taken over by the State of Illinois and may soon be closing. Affected families will be able to secure alternate insurance on the exchange via a special enrollment.

When you look at the available health insurance options, be sure to consider plans for which Lake Forest Pediatrics is a participating “in-network” provider. Please review your insurance options carefully, as many exchange-based plans do not include Lake Forest Pediatrics.

We care about you and your family’s health! At Lake Forest Pediatrics, we are committed to providing excellent healthcare – we look forward to continuing to serve your family!

Flu Vaccine Options for the Coming Season

Post Date: 1472011200

The CDC has announced the results of scientific studies on the flu mist. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) found the nasal mist vaccine to be relatively ineffective in flu seasons from 2013-2016. The most recent round of research found the flu mist no longer offers a stronger immunity than the traditional flu shot. Because of this, Lake Forest Pediatric Associates will only offer the more effective injected flu vaccination option this year.

Support Children’s Health Insurance Program

Lake Forest Pediatrics strives to provide high quality, compassionate, and outstanding pediatric care to the families of the communities we serve. The well-being and availability of health care for kids is a very important matter. For over 20 years the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) has helped provide healthcare for children and their families.

It has been over 100 days since Congress passed funding for this program. In order to avoid a government shutdown by January 19th, Congress must pass a new government spending bill. We encourage you to make your voice heard by contacting your members of Congress to let them know the importance of including CHIP funding in this bill.

Call your members of Congress today:
877-233-9025 and be directed to the offices of your federal legislators.

Tweet to your members of Congress today and include this hashtag: #ExtendCHIP
